She adapted to Canadian life, made the Dean’s list and received several merit-based scholarships while at GBC. In 2022 she has been nominated for the Premier’s Awards in the Recent Graduate Category.

Like so many entrepreneurs, Alusha honed her skills by working as an event planner within prestigious event organizations including the Distillery District, Royal Ontario Museum and Berkeley Church before starting her own company A Lush Affair.

In 2009, Amy Symington was working on her Culinary Management – Nutrition diploma at George Brown when she started to volunteer at Gilda's Club Toronto, doing culinary nutrition workshops for the members. Among these were supper clubs held two nights a week to help facilitate attendance at evening-based group meetings.

Ashley began her journey in senior care as a 16-year-old student in a co-op placement, where she first dreamed of opening her own care facility. Together with her husband, she founded Memory & Company, a unique respite hotel and premium day program tailored to seniors’ needs.

Following in his mother's footsteps, Barley Chironda pursued nursing. He credits the education he received at George Brown College with laying the foundation for a career full of progressive challenges, travel, and lifelong learning. 

In 2024 Chironda relocated to San Francisco, California, to take on an exciting new role as national infection preventionist and clinical solutions director at Clorox. He was previously with Clorox Canada for eight years, first as a business development and infection control specialist, then as national healthcare sales director and international infection control specialist.

Diagnosed with a degenerative eye condition and hearing impairment, Brian founded Achilles Canada, a non-profit that enables Canadians with disabilities to return to athletics and outdoor activities. His passion for sports and commitment to inclusivity have created lasting opportunities for physically impaired individuals to stay active and engaged in their communities.

As part of her program, Cassandra was asked to make “friendly visits” with residents at retirement homes. When she realized how meaningful these interactions were, it was an epiphany. As COVID10 confined residents to their rooms and exacerbated their loneliness, Cassandra developed and innovative program allowing residents to use iPads so they could engage with each other.

Chabi grew up in Panama City, Panama and has been dancing since her early years, starting with creative movement and tap, then slowly progressing into ballet. She kicked off her Dance Performance program with George Brown College through video training during the pandemic, then participated in Ballet Jörgen’s Mentorship program, and has been a part of the Junior Company and performed in exciting productions like The Nutcracker.

David moved from Montreal to Toronto in 1980 for a three-year Business/Marketing program at George Brown College. Engaging deeply at GBC, he took on roles as the music director and station manager at the campus radio station GBFM. Transitioning into the wellness business in 2010, he founded a studio, specializing in Taichi and Qigong. David credits his diverse career and GBC education for his success, emphasizing the significance of cultivating relationships.

Award-winning culinary artisan Chef David Wolfman is a professor at the College since 1994. He has not only revolutionized the culinary landscape here in Canada, but he has also changed the way the world thinks about Indigenous and North American cuisine. Chef Devan Rajkumar, known as “Chef Dev,” is a dynamic culinary personality renowned for his skill, passion, and energy. Classically trained, he has excelled in top-tier kitchens, television shows, and culinary series, consistently pushing the boundaries of innovation and creativity. Proudly Guyanese-Canadian with East Asian roots, Chef Devan aims to modernize East and West Indian cuisines, sharing his cultural heritage through food. He has been a prominent figure on Cityline and Fire Masters and is a sought-after brand ambassador and culinary expert. Chef Devan also mentors youth and engages in community service, and in May 2024, he released his debut cookbook, Mad Love: Big Flavors Made to Share, from South Asia to the West Indies.

Diego, with a decade of experience in pastry at global hotels like The Ritz Carlton and JW Marriott, achieved the position of Executive Pastry Chef at Hyatt Centric San Isidro, Peru. Driven by a desire for further education, he enrolled at George Brown College, immersing himself in a transformative post-COVID classroom setting. Beyond culinary studies, courses in business, sustainability, and marketing at GBC provided valuable insights, paving the way for his entrepreneurial journey. With a focus on ethically sourced cocoa, Diego launched a chocolate shop, leveraging multicultural insights gained at GBC for innovative flavour profiles.

Don holds the role of Academic Program Co-ordinator and Professor at George Brown College's Bachelor of Behaviour Analysis Program. Despite facing speech challenges and recognizing his atypical learning style early on, Don's journey from a rural farming town in the Philippines to earning a Ph.D. in Behaviour Analysis exemplifies resilience, curiosity, and a commitment to inclusivity in education. His dedication to fostering enriching learning environments and promoting diversity serves as an inspiration to students and colleagues alike.

In 1975, a unique class of nurses graduated from GBC's School of Nursing. Not only was Donna among the first graduates of the newly formed GBC nursing program, but she was also the last graduating class from the Toronto General Hospital campus before its official integration into the college.

Doug Hietkamp

Tool & Die Designer, 1986

Doug Hietkamp graduated as a Tool and Die Designer and this education gave Doug his first employment at Husky Injection Molding Systems as a designer of molds, advancing himself to a senior design position, responsible for industry leading-edge molds, and obtaining two patents.

For many years he served as Teknion’s Director of Sustainable Development Programs and was responsible for the development of business strategies, as well as the outreach and support of Teknion’s environmental initiatives. In 2024 he created a scholarship to support students at his alma mater.

Dyan Grace Abadonio, a George Brown College alum, transformed her nursing dream into reality, overcoming unconventional challenges. She joined as a mature student, completed her studies, and now works as a Registered Practical Nurse, proving that age is no barrier.

Dymika is the founder and creative director of a female-powered creative agency with an expanding client base. She won the College's 2018 Student Entrepreneurship Award and was nominated for a Premier's Award celebrating outstanding Ontario college grads in 2021.

Emefa Kuadey started her successful fashion design business while still in college. Through her hard work and creative designs, she has achieved significant success and brand recognition, particularly in light of her company's online and in-store partnership with mega-retailer Hudson's Bay. Her impressive work and path from civil engineering into the world of fashion has been featured in the November 2023 issue of Canadian Fashion Magazine.

 

Emily Clairoux

Emily is an artist from the Algonquin’s of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation, and is of mixed heritage Anishinaabe and French. She works under the name Eagle Woman Arts in her creative practice. Her work is inspired by her community, as well as the teachings she’s picked up along the way.

Currently serving as the Vice President of Clinical Removable Prosthetics and Design Technology at Aspen Dental, Eric’s journey from a GBC student to a prominent figure in his industry serves as an inspirational story for current and prospective students aiming to follow in his footsteps. As a researcher, educator, author, and leading authority in denturism, Eric helps develop protocols and materials for dental clinicians and technicians around the world.

Evan Alexander Smith

Evan is a classically trained, award-winning Canadian-American actor and voice-over artist. He was born and raised in Toronto, where he studied at George Brown Theatre School before starring in the original Canadian company of The Toxic Avenger Musical. His performance earned him a Dora Award Nomination, and he won a Gemini Award for his contributions to a documentary that followed the show’s journey from rehearsal to opening night. He spent two seasons at Canada’s prestigious Shaw Festival, starring in productions of Ragtime, His Girl Friday, Guys & Dolls, and Lady Windermere’s Fan.

Born in Punjab and raised in Ontario, Goldy Notay pursued her passion for theatre despite facing racism and familial expectations. After graduating from GBC Theatre School, she moved to London, England, where she built a successful film, TV, and stage career. Notay's recent highlights include performances at the Royal National Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, and the Life of Pi U.K. and Ireland tour.

Grace Dvornik

Grace is used to cooking in very tight spaces. She measures out ingredients before getting started, chops vegetables in advance and always cleans up as she goes. She is a private chef who has worked on superyachts in the Caribbean, Bahamas and the United States.

Greg is currently the Manager of Student Systems in the Office of the Registrar. He is excited to be working on a major Student Information System Renovation project at George Brown College to help modernize and enhance the systems that students, faculty and staff interact with every day.

Heather, Vice President of People Services at Arlo Hotels, is a GBC alumna with a certificate in Human Resource Management. In 2024, she was honoured as one of The Top Women Leaders of New York, recognizing her instrumental role in creating Arlo's award-winning culture. Berti's leadership helped Arlo Hotels earn a spot on Crain's Top 100 Best Places to Work for consecutive years.

Ishaa Vinod Chopra

Ishaa is a dedicated mental health advocate and multidisciplinary artist. Utilizing her background in dance and art therapies, she has published her memoir, Finding Order in Disorder, and will be teaching Dance Therapy at Workman Arts. Ishaa has been featured in mental health film festivals and runs a YouTube channel showcasing diverse dance genres. Her professional experience spans three continents, where she has fostered inclusive, positive environments.

Currently, Janielle stars as a guest expert on the popular Canadian morning show “Cityline”, sharing the latest fashion trends. She is also a fashion stylist and TV Guest Expert at Today’s Shopping Choice.

After making it to the quarter-finals of season three of The Great Canadian Baking Show, Jasmine started her first year of the Baking and Pastry Arts Management program in September 2020.

Jex's love for cooking was sparked in his parents' kitchen, where he uncovered various Caribbean flavours. Through his venture, Transcend by Jex Meals, he aims to deliver his culinary creations, inspired by Caribbean and global influences, directly to customers' homes.

Jolene May is Anishinaabe from Whitefish River Birch Island. She is highly motivated in Indigenous student success initiatives and was the first-ever elected Indigenous student representative to have a seat on the Student Association Board of George Brown College. Jolene is passionate about helping Indigenous students be successful in their education journey and is excited to help students by assisting them with their needs while attending GBC.

Tiffany Lyndall-Knight

Tiffany is a Canadian-born, Australian-raised actor and theatre educator with extensive experience on stage and screen. She has been nominated for four Jessie Theatre Richardson awards and has performed for eight seasons at Vancouver's Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival. A graduate of GBC Theatre School, Tiffany has a strong background in teaching and creating theatre programs for young people. She co-founded the Gateway Academy of Performing Arts and has taught at several institutions, including the William Davis Centre, UBC, Adelaide Centre for the Arts, and Flinders University Drama Centre.

Tom Riefesel

Architectural Technology, 1981

Tom began his Navy career in 1982, rising through the ranks from Signalman to Chief Petty Officer 1st class, serving on numerous ships and key naval assignments, including as Chief Petty Officer of the Royal Canadian Navy. In 2016, he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander, where he led the Ottawa Detachment of Personnel Coordination Centre Pacific until retiring in 2018. Currently, he is a Senior Manager of Security Operations at the Canada Border Services Agency. Tom and his wife enjoy sailing, skiing, and beekeeping in Chelsea, QC.

Tom is a dedicated Professor and Coordinator of Welding at GBC and is honoured at the Employee Service Recognition event for his remarkable 46-year career. Tom, who started at GBC as a student in the early '70s, has been a tireless advocate for inclusion, working to break down barriers for women, people with disabilities, and other marginalized groups in the trades. His advocacy extended to his role as a union steward and President of OPSEU Local 556, driven by his own experiences as an immigrant from Italy.

Tony is a resilient entrepreneur who has faced and conquered numerous challenges in the business world. Graduating into an industry battered by shutdowns and restrictions due to the pandemic, Tony's determination and perseverance have propelled him forward. Now, as the co-owner of a thriving bubble tea shop in east Toronto, Tony's entrepreneurial spirit inspires those around him. Additionally, he was honoured as the 2022 Alumni Entrepreneur of the Year by startGBC, further cementing his status as a trailblazer in the entrepreneurial community.

Theatre Arts – Performance, 2017

Tymika is an accomplished actor who turned a time of abrupt change and shutdowns into a period of creativity and growth, personally and professionally. Momentum started to build for Tafari during the height of the pandemic and continues to grow with new opportunities in the U.S., thanks to her work on the show Slip, a streaming series from celebrity executive producer Dakota Johnson.

Each year the jury reviews hundreds of submissions looking for applicants who embody innovation and leadership in the Autodesk Construction Solutions industry. As Director of Digital Practice at Diamond Schmitt, Victor provides BIM support for each of the firm's projects and ensures project teams are set-up for success.

Victoria hails from St. Lucia but journeyed to Toronto at 21 to pursue studies at George Brown College, specializing in Hospitality Management and Haute Cuisine. After gaining experience in St. Lucia's hospitality sector, she returned to further her education in Food and Nutrition Management. Inspired by a vision to introduce authentic St. Lucian flavours to Canada's culinary landscape, Victoria launched a distinctive line of all-natural sauces and spices, aiming to be among the pioneering St. Lucian product creators in Canada.
