How to apply for these awards

To be considered for any of the awards listed below, students must be enrolled full-time in a program from the Centre for Preparatory and Liberal Studies and can apply by selecting Divisional Winter Awards in the Student Profile application through STU-VIEW during the award application window.

Available Awards

Adele Lynn Jacobson Memorial Scholarship

Friends & Family of Adele Lynn Jacobson have donated funds for the establishment of the Adele Lynn Jacobson Memorial Scholarship. The award is available to students in the Academic Upgrading program (A737) or the Academic Upgrading for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Adults (A738) in any year of study. The following criteria must be met by the applicant:

  • The student must demonstrate effort and commitment to furthering education with a 2.7 GPA;
  • Student must display financial need and Ontario residency.

AU Grit and Determination Award

The School of Work and College Preparation staff has donated funds for the establishment of the AU Grit and Determination Award. The award is available to domestic students in the A738: Anglo (Hearing) and Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Academic Upgrading (ASL) program in their 1st year of study.

The following criteria must be met by the applicant:

  • Student must submit an essay about grit and determination in English or ASL describing how they are able to accomplish their academic achievements despite the obstacles in their life.

Centre for Preparatory and Liberal Studies Scholarship

The Centre for Preparatory and Liberal Studies Scholarships are available to domestic students in a CPLS program (on an annual rotational basis) in their final semester of study.

The following criteria must be met by the applicant:

  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA;
  • Student must display financial need;
  • The student must demonstrate leadership as determined by faculty.

CPLS Pre-Programs Award

The CPLS Pre-Programs Award is a faculty-supported scholarship recognizing the hard work and dedication of all students in Pre-Health (A109 & A108), and Human Services Foundations (A113). This award is given out each semester (Fall, Winter, Spring) to a student from each program.

CTTP Scholarship Fund

The award is available to full-time students in R403 program in any year of study.

  • Minimum of 3.5 GPA;
  • Student must display commitment and spirit of dedication to professional learning; demonstrate an openness to learning from others and working with others; exhibit professional skills pertaining to their field of study.

Dean's Medal

CPLS awards a Dean's Medal to a graduating student in each program of the Centre. The award goes to a student who has high academic standing and gives promise in the opinion of the faculty.

The following criteria must be met by the applicant:

  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA.

De La Salle Bursary

Vince Thompson has donated funds for the establishment of the De La Salle Bursary. The award is available to domestic students in the Augment Education program in any year of study.

The following criteria must be met by the applicant:

  • Student must display financial need;
  • Student must submit an essay describing their community activities as well as the obstacles they have overcome in their pursuit of post-secondary education.

GAS Achievement Academic Award

The General Arts and Science Achievement Academic Award. The award is available to students in the R101 General Arts and Science (Diploma) and R104 General Arts and Science (Certificate) program in any year of study.

The following criteria must be met by the applicant:

  • Minimum of 3.5 GPA.
  • Student must demonstrate leadership by example.

Georgia Quartaro Scholarship

In honour of Georgia's lifelong commitment to helping the disadvantaged, the "Georgia Quartaro Scholarship" was established. The award is available to students in any program of CPLS in any year of study (with at least one semester completed).

  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA;
  • Student must display financial need and exhibit a commitment and spirit of dedication to chosen field of study.

Harris Family Maple Fund

The Donor has generously contributed $1,000 towards a yearly award.  The award will be disbursed over the next five (5) years. Two (2) awards valued at $100 each will be disbursed yearly. One (1) award of $100 will be presented to one (1) full-time student in the Assistant Cook Extended Training Program (A105) and one (1) award of $100 will be presented to one (1) full-time student in the Construction Craft Worker Foundations Extended Training Program (A106) with the following criteria:

Criteria:

  • Registered, full-time student
  • Have applied for studies at George Brown College and received a GBC student number
  • Demonstrated financial as determined by the institution’s policies  
  • Sole support parent, shared support parent, or a parent with privileges
  • Has a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater

Application Process:

  • Applicants must complete an application with the Augmented Education Department. 
  • The award will be disbursed at the annual Augmented Education graduation ceremony 

Hilti Scholarship for Women Transitioning to Trades & Employment

This gift will be distributed through the Community Partnerships Office to female, gender non-binary, trans or 2-spirit students applying to advance their education through a program at the Centre for Construction & Engineering Technologies at George Brown College. Awards will be presented to eligible students who have completed the Women Transitioning to Trades & Employment Program (A740) and decide to enter a 1-year certificate, 2-year diploma or 3-year advanced diploma program afterwards.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Registered, full-time, domestic student
  • Enrolled in or has successfully completed the Women Transitioning to Trades & Employment Program (A740) in the Community Partnerships Office. 
  • Exhibits interest in their field of study and has strong passion for future academic and professional goals. 
  • Plans to pursue a 1-year certificate, 2-year diploma or 3-year advanced diploma at the Centre for Construction and Engineering Technologies at George Brown College. 
  • Student self-identifies as woman, gender non-binary, trans or 2-spirit. 
  • In addition to the scholarship, each recipient will receive a laptop and coverage for textbooks and materials (valued at $1,000)

Ishwar Dean Memorial Award

Various/Sandra Dean has donated funds for the establishment of the Ishwar Dean Memorial Award. This award is available to any registered George Brown College Student in Preparatory & Liberal Studies in any year of study for all programs in this category

The following criteria must be met by the applicant:

  • The student must display financial need
  • Preference for students who are sole-support parents
  • The student has overcome obstacles to undertake their studies at George Brown College
  • The student must be a registered domestic student
  • The student must display passion for their field of study

Joan Murphy Scholarship

This scholarship is available to a graduating student in the A106 and/or A107 programs.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Registered full-time domestic student
  • Ontario Resident
  • Demonstrated financial
  • Overcome obstacles
  • Demonstrates passion for studies

Junior League of Toronto Culinary Scholarship

The Junior League of Toronto has donated funds for the establishment of the Junior League of Toronto Culinary Scholarship. The award is available to students in the Culinary Skills (Preparatory Training) Program A110 who meet the following criteria:

  • Domestic student
  • Student must display financial need
  • Student must exhibit interest in their field of study and have a strong passion for future academic and professional goals

Kevin Kobus Award 

The De La Salle Endowment has designated 2,000 annually to the Augmented Education Program for this award.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Registered full-time domestic and/or international student
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Full-time student(s) from any program at the Centre for Preparatory and Liberal Studies (CPLS)
  • Preference for students who self-identify as Black and/or from the BIPOC community
  • Students must demonstrate community involvement through various means, such as volunteer experience, involvement with the College, and/or their community
  • Preference will be given to students who have overcome personal obstacles to obtain their studies

Mental Health Conference Scholarship

The Mental Health Conference Scholarship is awarded to domestic students in A107 Transitions to Post-Secondary program, A105 Assistant Cook Extended Training, and A106 Construction Craft Worker Extended Training programs in any year of study.

The following criteria must be met by the applicant:

  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA;
  • The student must be actively involved in the Community (college and/or external);
  • Student must display financial need;
  • The student must be entering a further post-secondary or apprenticeship program and demonstrate interest in their area of study.

Mika's Intention Scholarship

This award was created to support the advancement of the education of students at George Brown College

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Resident of Ontario for at least 12 months prior to enrolment
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Have applied for full-time studies at George Brown College and received a GBC student number
  • Enrolled in final year full-time studies at Centre for Preparatory & Liberal Studies
  • Demonstrates leadership qualities through various means such as volunteer community services and commitment to working with others
  • Have overcome obstacles to undertake their studies.

Naranjan Singh Award

The Naranjan Singh Award is available to domestic students in the R101 and R104 program in their first year of study with the highest GPA.

The following criteria must be met by the applicant:

  • Minimum of 3.5 GPA.

Noella Milne Excellence Award for Global Great Books Certificate

Every year, six (6) awards of $500 each will be presented to six (6) full-time students from the Centre for Preparatory & Liberal Studies at George Brown College with the following Criteria:

Criteria:

  • Registered full-time domestic and/or international student
  • Students who have completed the Global Great Books Certificate Program, which includes the following courses:
    • Diploma students are required to have taken the “Ancient Great Thinkers” (GHUM 1088) plus "Heaven and Hell: Journeys from Medieval and Classical Thinkers" (GHUM 1096).
    • Degree students are required to take “Global Ancient Thought” (LHUM 1226) plus “Global Classical and Medieval Literature" (LHUM 1306).
  • Diploma students must have attained the Certificate by achieving a minimum “B” grade in the “Ancient Great Thinkers” course and a minimum “B” grade in “Heaven and Hell: Journeys Through Classical and Medieval Thinkers” course.
  • Degree students must have attained the Certificate by achieving a minimum “B” grade in the “Global Ancient Thought” course and a minimum “B” grade in the “Global Classical and Medieval Literature” course.
  • Students must demonstrate passion for field of study as evidenced by valuable contributions to class discussions and course work for the two courses required to achieve the “Global Great Books Certificate”.
  • Must be a current student at George Brown College

President's TPE Bursary

The President's Office has donated funds for the establishment of the President's TPE Bursary. The award is available to full-time students in the A107 Transitions to Post-Secondary Education program in their second or third semester of study.

The following criteria must be met by the applicant:

  • The student must demonstrate academic and personal excellence.

School of Communication Student Achievement Award

Brooke Winterstein has donated funds for the establishment of the School of Communication Student Achievement Award. This award is available to any registered George Brown College Student in the Centre for Preparatory & Liberal Studies in any year of study for all programs in this category

The following criteria must be met by the applicant:

  • Student is nominated by a faculty member by completing the School of Communication Student Achievement Award Nomination Form.
  • The student is enrolled in any program that requires college English COM1007

The Gordon Cressy and Joanne Campbell Leadership Award

The donor, Donette Chin-Loy Chang, would like to designate an award to students enrolled in the Augmented Education program at George Brown College, in honour of Gordon Cressy and Joanne Campbell.

Starting in the 2022-2023 academic year and ending in the 2026-2027 academic year, one (1) award of $1,000.00 will be presented annually to one (1) student in the Augmented Education Program at George Brown College; or, at the discretion of Augmented Education leaders, this award can be divided into two (2) awards of $500 each for two (2) students in the Augmented Education Program.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be registered, full-time in Augmented Education
  • Participates enthusiastically in the program and shows a passion for the area of study
  • Demonstrates leadership and takes initiative among class members throughout the course of study
  • Preference can be given to those students who demonstrate financial need as determined by the institution’s policies

Uncle Bob Scholarship

College Staff have donated funds for the establishment of the Uncle Bob Scholarship in memory of Professor Bob Koledin. The award is available to domestic students in the Academic Upgrading program (A737) or the Academic Upgrading for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Adults (A738) in any year of study. The following criteria must be met by the applicant:

  • Student must display financial need.
