Program Description

Program Overview

The Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Certificates and Diplomas program prepares students to perform at a level that will assist them in gaining entry to a Health Sciences program at George Brown College, including Practical Nursing. It also gives students a basic understanding of social sciences and human relations. This helps them relate to people at college in further studies and at work in health care institutions or with health care providers. Throughout the program, students study biology and chemistry. Other courses include applied math, communications and general education electives.

PRE-PROGRAMS

Pre-programs are post-secondary certificate programs that offer students the opportunity to take courses for career exploration or to qualify for further study. With small class sizes, dedicated teachers and built-in advising and supports, the pre-programs help students strengthen their academic skills and prepare for further coursework.

OUR PROGRAM

The Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Certificates and Diplomas program prepares students academically for future study in many Health Sciences programs by setting a foundation in core mathematics and science courses and providing an overview of the health care industry.

Upon completion of the program, students have a variety of pathways at George Brown College, including Practical Nursing, Dental AssistingOrthotics/Prosthetics, Medical Office Administration, Hearing Instrument Specialist and Recreation Management in Gerontology, among others or other post-secondary options.

Today's health care employers are looking for skilled workers to address a critical labour shortage. Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Certificates and Diplomas provides students with practical training, confidence-building and communication skills needed to excel in many health care programs and careers in the field. Through classroom and hands-on study, students explore careers in the health sector, including those in health care institutions or with health care providers. Students also gain a basic understanding of social sciences and human relations – essential skills for the field of health sciences.

Career development, academic advising and student success services support career exploration and other academic needs of all Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Certificates and Diplomas students.

Your Career

The Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Certificates and Diplomas program prepares students to gain entry to Health Science programs at post-secondary institutions and provides an opportunity to earn credits required in sciences, math, and English for many Health Science programs at the college level. The program also provides direct pathways opportunities to the following programs at George Brown College: Practical Nursing, Dental Assisting and Recreation Management Gerontology. This program does not provide a direct pathway to degree programs such as the Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Each of these programs reserves a limited number of seats per intake for Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Certificates and Diplomas graduates who meet certain conditions (such as a minimum grade point average for the program or minimum grades in specific courses) upon graduation from Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Certificates and Diplomas. Admission to some of these programs is highly competitive.

Students who intend to apply to any other post-secondary program at George Brown College or at another institution should check the admission requirements for the program. Graduates of Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Certificates and Diplomas may also apply for elective credit and exemptions for courses in those programs.
