Program Overview
The one-semester Personal Support Worker Pathway to Practical Nursing program prepares Personal Support Worker (PSW) graduates for entry into the Practical Nursing (PN) program. This full-time program focuses on strengthening the academic skills required by the PN program.
Full Description
The 14-week Personal Support Worker Pathway to Practical Nursing (S119) program prepares PSW graduates to enter the Practical Nursing (PN) program.
This program is designed to strengthen the core academic skills required of a practical nurse and focuses on:
- biology
- chemistry
- mathematics
- health and wellness
- English language skills
- interprofessional relationships
This 252-hour program was created and designed by the Sally Horsfall Eaton School of Nursing faculty. Students can expect approximately 18 hours per week of classes and labs scheduled between 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday to Friday.
This is a hybrid program with most classes delivered in-person on-site at our state-of-the-art Daphne Cockwell Centre for Health Sciences at Waterfront Campus located in downtown Toronto.

PLEASE NOTE: As this is a bridging program designed to strengthen academic skills in preparation for the Practical Nursing program, there is no clinical placement component.

Educational Pathways
Graduates of this Personal Support Worker Pathway to Practical Nursing (S119) program who fulfill all course requirements and achieve a program grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher on the first attempt may be eligible for the Practical Nursing (S121) full-time program at George Brown College.
Eligible students completing the Personal Support Worker Pathway to Practical Nursing (S119) program will be required to start the Practical Nursing (S121) program in the semester beginning immediately following the completion of S119 (i.e., students completing S119 in the fall term would enter S121 in the winter term).
It is the responsibility of students transferring into George Brown’s Practical Nursing (S121) program to ensure they meet all special requirements for (S121) by the deadlines provided, including police vulnerable sector checks and submission of health records. Program Learning Outcomes
The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:
- Perform at a level that will satisfy the entrance requirements of a post-secondary health sciences program whose direct entrants must have a minimum qualification of OSSD, including biology and other science credits as required.
- Relate to persons in an educational institution and a health-care agency through an understanding of basic social sciences and human relations.

Admission Requirements
APPLICANTS TO THIS PROGRAM MUST HAVE COMPLETED AN ONTARIO PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKER CERTIFICATE
Specific requirements are as follows:
- Ontario Personal Support Worker (PSW) graduate (Ontario college certificate from a college of applied art and technology [CAAT] college), OR from an accredited private career college or Institution from 2014 onward
- minimum program grade point average of 3.0 (in PSW)
- grade 12 English C or U with a minimum grade of 65 per cent
- grade 11 Math (M or U) or grade 12 Math (C or U) with a minimum grade of 65 per cent
** Mature student status (19 years of age or older and no OSSD)
Mature students may take the Admissions Assessment for English and math, OR may consider upgrading to achieve the credit(s) needed in English and math.
Please note: Successful candidates will be required to start the S121 program in the semester immediately following completion of S119. It is the responsibility of students transferring into S121 to ensure they meet all special requirements for S121 by the deadlines provided, including police vulnerable sector check and submission of health records.
