Program Overview

The one-semester Personal Support Worker Pathway to Practical Nursing program prepares Personal Support Worker (PSW) graduates for entry into the Practical Nursing (PN) program. This full-time program focuses on strengthening the academic skills required by the PN program. 

If you apply to the May 2024/25 intake for this program, you will start in May 2025. To begin your studies in May 2024, apply to the 2023/24 academic year.

Full Description

The 14-week Personal Support Worker Pathway to Practical Nursing (S119) program prepares PSW graduates to enter the Practical Nursing (PN) program.

This program is designed to strengthen the core academic skills required of a practical nurse and focuses on:

  • biology
  • chemistry
  • mathematics
  • health and wellness
  • English language skills
  • interprofessional relationships

This 252-hour program was created and designed by the Sally Horsfall Eaton School of Nursing faculty. Students can expect approximately 18 hours per week of classes and labs scheduled between 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday to Friday.

This is a hybrid program with in-person classes delivered on-site at our state-of-the-art Daphne Cockwell Centre for Health Sciences at Waterfront Campus located in downtown Toronto.

PLEASE NOTE: As this is a bridging program designed to strengthen academic skills in preparation for the Practical Nursing program, there is no clinical placement component.

George Brown College's Personal Support Worker Pathway to Practical Nursing program prepares PSW students for further study in the Practical Nursing program by enhancing core knowledge in sciences, math, humanities, communications and English.

Educational Pathways

Graduates of this Personal Support Worker Pathway to Practical Nursing (S119) program who fulfill all course requirements and achieve a program grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher on the first attempt may be eligible for the Practical Nursing (S121) full-time program at George Brown College.

Eligible students completing the Personal Support Worker Pathway to Practical Nursing (S119) program will be required to start the Practical Nursing (S121) program in the semester beginning immediately following the completion of S119 (i.e. students completing S119 in the fall term would enter S121 in the winter term).

It is the responsibility of students transferring into George Brown's Practical Nursing (S121) program to ensure they meet all special requirements for (S121) by the deadlines provided, including police vulnerable sector checks and submission of health records.
