Elvis Glover aims high to advance information technology and computing in Africa

With a vision that spans continents, Elvis Glover is pursuing Cloud Computing at George Brown College (GBC) to revolutionize Africa's technology landscape. The Ghanaian student, already holding a degree in computer engineering and a master’s in accounting and finance, sees cloud computing as a transformative force waiting to be unleashed in his home continent.

"Cloud computing is revolutionary," Glover says, brimming with enthusiasm. "It has numerous benefits – cost efficiency, remote accessibility, enhanced collaboration. But it's not a big thing in Africa yet."

His choice of GBC wasn't coincidental. After extensive research on top IT institutions, Glover found himself drawn to GBC and the college's urban setting in Toronto. "I felt I chose the right college because it's in the heart of the city," he reflects. "The city really is your classroom."

"It has been a transformative decision for me," Glover shares. "With cloud computing, the academics are top-notch. We do hands-on practice. I started with little or no knowledge, but now I can confidently say that I'm really good at it."

Student ambassador and community builder

As a student ambassador for the Black Students Success Network (BSSN), Glover has immersed himself in campus life. In his role, he supports other Black students with their academics, career guidance, and mental health initiatives, including a popular weekly talking circle where students discuss their challenges navigating life with peers.

The inclusive environment has impressed Glover. "Schools in Canada, especially George Brown, are very accommodating," he notes. "You can see the diversity. You don't feel left out; if you face challenges, there are the right channels to help you address them."

Looking ahead

Glover’s ambitions are both personal and philanthropic. While his immediate goal is gaining industry experience, his ultimate vision involves returning to Ghana to give back. "I want to get hands-on experience and go back to Africa to impact the technology landscape," he explains.

His newfound passion for student engagement has also ignited an interest in pursuing academic roles, potentially as a lecturer and sharing the knowledge he has acquired.

A message to future students

Glover offers compelling advice to aspiring students: "Instead of just going through the school, you must allow the school to go through you. Take part in student life activities. If you are a Black student, engage with Black Futures Initiative (BFI) and BSSN activities. It's not going to be easy, but it's worth it."

Through his journey at GBC, Glover highlights how academic excellence, community engagement, and a vision for the future can create meaningful change. His story isn't just about personal success – it's about building bridges between continents and creating opportunities for future generations.
