Love found a second home at George Brown College (GBC). Our Valentine's Day alumni spotlight shines on two professional couples who pursued their academic dreams at GBC and transformed their connections into shared professional journeys.

Retraining for exciting new roles in IT and energy

For Shweta Shukla and Sandeep Pandey, their 17-year journey represents a testament to partnership and determination. In 2018, Shweta took the first step by enrolling in GBC's Information Systems Business Analysis program, leaving behind an established technology career to pursue new opportunities in Canada. "It was not an easy decision," reflects Sandeep, who would join her a year later in the Project Management postgraduate program. "But building a better life in Canada motivated us," adds Shweta.

For the couple, establishing themselves in a new country meant creating a new support network from scratch. "We knew no one here, so we had to support each other," explains Sandeep. "We were just holding hands and trying to achieve new milestones every year."

Today, their shared commitment to education has translated into remarkable professional achievements. Shweta works as a Senior Cloud Operations and Systems Analyst at TD, while Sandeep serves as a Senior Mechanical Lead at Worley in the nuclear energy sector.

Working side-by-side for Michelin-star success

Jeremy and Cassie Austin's journey began in a small Thornbury restaurant in 2008, eventually leading them both to GBC's Centre for Hospitality and Culinary Arts in 2012. Jeremy would pursue the Culinary Skills program and postgraduate in Culinary Arts—Italian, while Cassie would set her focus on Food and Beverage Management. "We would spend a lot of time talking about what our dream restaurant would be like," Cassie remembers.

The Austins faced their own trials when, just ten days after their wedding in 2013, Jeremy departed for a four-month study abroad program in Italy. "Living in the city, going to school, and working—it was intense," Jeremy reflects on their time at GBC. "We could relate to what the other one was going through, but going through it together was really good."

The Austins achieved their dream of restaurant ownership, earning a Michelin star for their establishment, The Pine, while simultaneously welcoming their first child, moving homes, and expanding their business.

Keys to balancing love and learning

Both couples share valuable insights for maintaining strong relationships while pursuing education. "Divide your time reasonably between studies, your relationship, and building a life," advises Sandeep.

The Austins emphasize the importance of friendship as a foundation. "Any sort of romantic relationship should have a solid foundation as friendship first," Cassie shares, "Because no matter the highs, no matter the lows, you're doing it with your best friend."

Looking forward together

As Shweta and Sandeep prepare to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary and await their second child, they remain committed to giving back to the GBC community. "Whatever we have learned from the college, we try to give back," says Shweta.

The Austins continue to grow their business while maintaining their connection through their shared passion for food. As Jeremy says, "Take the path of maximum responsibility, because that's where maximum adventure waits."
