George Brown College’s Centre for Construction and Engineering Technologies (CCET) and Building Opportunities for Life Today (BOLT) celebrated another successful annual Day of Discovery recently at the Casa Loma Campus.
During the Day of Discovery, held in collaboration with Tridel, Canada’s largest condo developer, high school participants get an educational and hands-on experience of what a career in construction looks like and how to get started.
This year, 18 participants were taken on a campus tour, exploring the millwright, welding, carpentry, plumbing workshops and more. They also were able to attend a site visit tour of Tridel’s Aqualuna residential property on the Waterfront.
“We are thrilled to continue this incredible journey of collaboration with BOLT participants, as we believe that innovation and education are the cornerstones of progress and discovery,” said Alexis Trejgo, CCET’s Co-Op, Work Placement & Education Co-ordinator. “This partnership exemplifies our commitment to pushing the boundaries of what's possible. Together, we look forward to each Day of Discovery that will not only benefit our organizations but also ignite the spark of curiosity in all those who join us on this transformative path."
BOLT and Tridel are supportive and engaged industry partners with George Brown College.
BOLT has provided more than 240 scholarships to George Brown students since 2009, supporting marginalized youth in exploring and growing in construction and the skilled trades industry. Many of the scholarship recipients have gone on to find rewarding careers in the construction industry.
The Angelo DelZotto School of Construction Management is named after one of Tridel’s founders. The school offers eight programs, including Ontario’s only four-year degree program in construction management.
The day included opening remarks from Joe Cressy, Senior Vice-President, External Relations, Communications and Real Estate Development; Barbra Pattern, BOLT Executive Director; the Honourable Minister of Education Stephen Lecce; the Honourable Associate Minister of Transportation Vijay Thanigasalam; Aris Babikian, MPP of Scarborough—Agincourt; and was moderated by CTV News anchor Roger Petersen.
“This partnership is a win-win for the industry, the college, Tridel and for the students. We look forward to continuing this important work together and truly making a difference,” said Cressy.
