George Brown College (GBC) graduate and entrepreneur Ramneet Brar has been honoured for her efforts to improve career prospects for international students in Canada.
Brar, a 2017 graduate of the Business Administration–Accounting program who came to Canada from India, is among the 10 former international students and winners of the inaugural International Alumni of Impact program launched by ApplyBoard, a Kitchener, Ontario-based online service that simplifies the study abroad application experience. To recognize winners' accomplishments, ApplyBoard will establish one-time scholarships for international students in the winners' names.
"Going to George Brown College was one of the best decisions I made," Brar said. "From a centrally located campus to an amazing faculty, the two years and endless support I got from GBC enabled me to kickstart my life in Canada."
Providing career support, resources, and job opportunities
After her GBC graduation, Brar launched her accounting career as a tax consultant with KPMG. With the experience gained in this position and as an international student, Brar co-founded Isempower, an ed-tech startup that helps higher education institutions provide personalized career support and resources to international students. The platform also shows job opportunities available with Isempower partner employers. Brar is Isempower's Chief Operating Officer (COO).
Through her work at Isempower, Brar has facilitated over 600 job placements, cultivated a network of 50,000 students, partnered with more than 25 post-secondary education institutions and collaborated with over 100 employers across Canada, including Telus, BC Hydro and RBC. Brar received the Top 10 Women Leaders in Canada award by Women Entrepreneur India. She is also a public speaker on issues and challenges facing international students.
