Welcome to Online Learning at George Brown College.
In this microsite, we'll provide you with the tools and resources you need to be a successful online learner.
In this first module, you'll learn about the online platforms (and their technical requirements) you'll use for your studies. We'll also give you some tips about online etiquette and academic integrity at the college.
After completing this module, you'll be able to:
- Recognize your readiness for online learning
- Have a better understanding of the skills you need to have as an online learner
- Know what online learning platforms exist at GBC, and how to access them
- Identify what the basic software and hardware requirements are for your courses
- Understand the Colleges' values, as well as our online etiquette and academic integrity policies
Brightspace
In this module, we will go through Brightspace, the online learning environment and Learning Management System (LMS) used at George Brown College.
We have put together the essential things you need to know in order to use it successfully. So on the first day of classes, all you need to think about is whether your laptop is fully charged or not!
After completing this module, you will be able to:
- Have a better understanding of how to navigate Brightspace
- Know how to communicate with your instructors and peers
- Learn how to download content and upload assignments
- Learn how to attend online classes through Zoom or MS Teams
- Learn how to do online tests and where to access your grades
- Know who to contact if you are having issues with Brightspace
Academic Success Strategies
Module 3 is about giving you the tools you need to be successful in your studies. We’ll share effective ways to communicate with your instructors and classmates. We’ll also give you tips on how to prepare for online exams, online presentations and even online team assignments. Sorry, just because you are doing an online semester, it doesn't mean team assignments are going to stop!
After completing this module, you will be able to:
- Identify effective communication strategies for online courses
- Develop strategies for taking tests online and how to reduce test anxiety
- Gain an understanding of doing effective online presentations
- Know the tools to use for online team assignments
Personal Success Strategies
This module is all about you. Yes, YOU!
So far, we have covered all the academic things you need to know to be a successful online learner. In this module, we give you personal tips to set you up for success. We will give you some time management tips, teach you how to set up a SMART goal, help you with stress management and even how to keep yourself motivated throughout the whole semester.
After completing this module, you will be able to:
- Identify basic time management skills
- Learn how to set a SMART goal
- Have a better understanding of stress management tools
- Learn ways to stay motivated
