John (Giovanni) Arena was born in Bellantone Calabria, Italy in 1924. He moved to Toronto in 1957 and began his career in the Canadian hospitality industry. Over the years, he would become a renowned restauranteur and a beloved member of the Toronto community.
John's passion for food and hospitality led him to open nine restaurants throughout his long career. However, he is best known for his iconic restaurant, Winston's, formerly located in Toronto's Financial District. Winston's became a popular spot for politicians, celebrities, and businesspeople alike. John's warm hospitality and delicious cuisine made Winston's a staple in the Toronto dining scene for over three decades.
John's commitment to the culinary industry extended beyond his restaurants. He was a longtime supporter of George Brown College, where he helped raise funds for the creation of the Centre for Hospitality and Culinary Arts. He also served as a Director on the George Brown College Foundation board for 23 years. His contributions helped shape the culinary education of future generations. Indeed, he was influential in creating the fabric of the Toronto we know today.
John's love for food, family, and community was evident in all that he did. He was a generous and kind-hearted individual who touched the lives of many. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the Toronto community.
To honour John’s memory at George Brown College, The John Arena Aim High Memorial Scholarship will support students enrolled in Centre for Hospitality and Culinary Arts programs who demonstrate talent and passion for their studies as well as leadership in their communities. The annual award will carry on John’s legacy.
100% of your donation will go to George Brown College students receiving the John Arena Aim High Memorial Scholarship, no processing fees or administration fees will be applied to your gift. You will receive a tax receipt by email for donations made over $20.
