The startGBC Entrepreneurship Incubator at George Brown College had an exceptional 2024, with significant achievements and milestones that reinforced its role as a cornerstone for innovation and entrepreneurial success within the college and the greater Toronto community.
Among the standout moments of the year was the Arena Pitch Competition, where two startGBC students earned coveted spots to pitch their business for a chance at $10,000!
The Research, Innovation & Entrepreneurship Showcase (RIES) further solidified startGBC’s reputation as a hub of collaboration and community. Entrepreneurs and innovators showcased their groundbreaking work, participated in panel discussions featuring industry leaders, and engaged in dynamic speed-mentoring sessions, creating a vibrant space for networking and growth.
In 2024, startGBC also made its mark at major global events, with students representing George Brown College at the Collision and Elevate conferences. These opportunities allowed participants to connect with global innovators, gain insights into emerging trends in tech and elevate their entrepreneurial visions.
The highlight of the fall semester was Global Entrepreneurship Week, in which startGBC featured a record-breaking number of events for Canada! With hands-on workshops, Lunch Labs and Fireside chats to Expert Panels, a networking Mocktail event and our Pitch it GBC! with a prize pot of $12,000, the week celebrated entrepreneurship in all its glory, inspiring students, alumni, and the community to take bold steps in their entrepreneurial journeys.
Notably, George Brown College became the first college in Canada to offer students with a Financial Simulation workshop "scale up." This groundbreaking, hands-on initiative taught financial literacy while simulating real-world funding scenarios with angel investors, empowering participants to navigate the financial aspects of entrepreneurship with confidence.
