We're proud to share that Bengt Jörgen, the Artistic Director of Ballet Jörgen Canada and George Brown Dance, has been appointed a Member of the Order of Canada.
Jörgen received this appointment “for his commitment to promoting ballet in Canada as a choreographer and artistic director.” Governor-General Julie Payette made the announcement on December 27, 2018.
“I am truly humbled by my appointment to the Order of Canada and to be recognized for the incredible work being done by Canada’s Ballet Jörgen and George Brown Dance,” Jörgen said.
Jörgen co-founded Ballet Jörgen in 1987. The company tours classical and contemporary pieces to a wide range of locations across Canada, including small and rural communities. The company performs for approximately 60,000 people every year.
Education is also a key component of the company. It's an official partner of George Brown College to deliver our dance programs. Jörgen joined George Brown in 1989 as Resident Choreographer and became Artistic Director of the Dance School in 1992.
Jörgen’s appointment will be celebrated later this year at an official ceremony in Ottawa.
“I am grateful for the countless artists, faculty, staff and colleagues here at George Brown College who have shared our vision to make dance training and classical ballet accessible to all Canadians,” Jörgen said.
