Across the country, newcomers with exceptional skills face challenges similar to Okore’s as they try to establish themselves in Canada’s evolving economy. Skilled immigrants continue to contend with higher living costs, housing shortages, regional economic disparities and stiff job market competition. Gervan Fearon, economist and George Brown College president, emphasizes that while immigration continues to be a critical driver of Canada’s economic success, navigating this complex landscape requires a strategic, proactive approach. “Canada’s economic growth trajectory in 2025 is positive,” says Fearon.

In the kitchen of what once was the Kraft Heinz corporate offices in North York, Toronto chef Keith Pears prepared for his moment on the culinary world's greatest stage. A large Canadian flag was up on the wall, along with posters outlining the chef's dress code and the 10-rule code of conduct that governs participants at the Bocuse d'Or — often described as the Olympics of gastronomy. The competition prizes respect, co-operation, flexibility and integrity, as well as good food.

The newest addition to the George Brown College (GBC) waterfront campus is Limberlost Place, a stunning ten-storey, mass-timber building. The honey-toned interior was designed to maximize fresh air and natural light, while the structure itself was built for environmental resilience, with net-zero emissions, passive ventilation, and rooftop solar panels. Well before its 2025 completion date, Limberlost had already won twenty prestigious design awards and driven changes to Ontario’s building codes (previously, tall wood structures were limited to six levels).

Michelle Brnjac surveyed the storefront with growing optimism, recognizing the potential with each passing glance. Then came the closer. “Out back you can still see the outline of the old sign ‘Welcome to Quality’,” said the newly-arriving baker, referring to 238 Main Street’s historic Quality Greens. “As soon as I saw quality I knew this was it. That’s our slogan, where flavour meets quality.” With that final bit of assurance, Brnjac sealed the deal on relocating her family-run Eat My Sweets! from a tucked away corner in Streetsville to its high visibility new digs in downtown Milton. “It’s a blessing, and quite the learning curve if I’m being honest. Where we were before there wasn’t a lot of traffic,” said the George Brown College baking and pastry arts management graduate.
