Restoration and renovation efforts near completion
200 King Street East is one of the college's flagship buildings and an important part of the St. James campus. Due to extensive fire damage in the summer of 2021, the building has been closed for renovation for two years. Restoration efforts are now complete and the building has been made safe again thanks to the efforts of the Campus Facilities and Sustainability team and its partners. 200 King St. E. will soon reopen its doors for regular classes, services, and amenities.
“The ongoing closure of 200 King has been challenging for academic areas, support services as well as forcing the closure of student athletic facilities. We appreciate the flexibility of these affected departments that enabled GBC to continue to provide these services successfully in alternate locations or by alternate delivery methods,” said Nerys Rau, Director, Design and Construction. “I would also like to thank the facilities team and all the individuals who have been involved in the restoration work. Your efforts and dedication have been instrumental in allowing us to reopen in September.”
In preparation for September, renovations are being completed in the lobby and select areas of the building, as well as much-needed upgrades to the elevator banks.
For the Fall 2023 term all areas of 200 King will be open, including academic spaces, the library, student services, athletics, food services, print services, the bookstore, and office spaces.
“Thank you for your patience while we’ve been hard at work getting 200 King restored and renovated,” added Nerys. “I look forward to seeing the halls bustling with students and employees once again this September.”
