On Jan. 8, 2021, the George Brown College community marks the one-year anniversary of the plane crash in Tehran that claimed the lives of two of our students.
Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 crashed on Jan. 8, 2020 shortly after takeoff in Tehran, killing everyone on board. Many of the victims were Canadians and people travelling to Canada, including 34 people who were employed or studying at universities and colleges in Ontario. Two of the victims were George Brown students, one from the Architectural Technology program and another from the Computer Programmer Analyst program.
In remembrance of the victims and to commemorate the talent that has been lost, the provincial government provided George Brown College with funding for two dedicated scholarships for the 2020-2021 academic year. The value of each scholarship is $10,000.
“The impact of this tragedy is both immediate and long-term, and these scholarships will go far to support students whose lives have been forever affected emotionally and financially,” said Chris McGrath, George Brown’s Vice-President, Student Success.
The Ontario Remembrance Scholarship is available to both domestic and international students. Applicants must meet the following eligibility:
- must be enrolled in a diploma or degree program,
- must demonstrate financial need, and
- must demonstrate merit, which can include academic achievement and community service.
