(TORONTO) – George Brown College (GBC) is pleased to join this year’s Nuit Blanche Toronto on October 5th, 2024, presenting “The Home I Never Knew,” an engaging installation by Venezuelan visual artist and GBC student Sara Vargas Nessi. This installation will be showcased at the Daniels Waterfront Campus at 3 Lower Jarvis Street. It offers a unique and immersive artistic experience.
In line with this year’s Nuit Blanche theme, "Bridging Distance," Vargas Nessi’s video installation explores the emotional connections people form with places they have never visited. Inspired by Venezuela’s rich landscapes, this work highlights the powerful connections between physical absence and mental presence.
“I wanted to reflect on how memories and stories create a sense of belonging, even to places we've never seen," said Vargas Nessi. "This project is deeply personal, rooted in my heritage and the idea of home."
Projected onto the second-floor balcony of the Daniels Building, “The Home I Never Knew” will feature dreamlike scenes of Venezuela’s flora, fauna, and geological formations. The artwork combines close-up videos of mixed-media paintings with shadow silhouettes, inviting viewers to interpret and connect with these abstract visuals in a personal way.
“We are thrilled to support Sara’s installation at Nuit Blanche,” said Dr. Gervan Fearon, President, George Brown College. “This project underscores George Brown College’s commitment to community development. Through the richness of artistic expression, we all understand and appreciate diverse perspectives, thus expanding our worldview.”
The college welcomes the public to explore this unique artwork as part of Nuit Blanche’s celebration of art, culture, and connection.
Vargas Nessi is available for interviews to discuss her inspiration behind "The Home I Never Knew" and the personal stories that informed this project.
