The George Brown College experience is about a lot more than grade point averages. Now there’s a place where you can take stock of what you’ve gained from activities outside the classroom to help you showcase your human skills development and stand out in the job market.
Have you completed an experiential or work-integrated learning experience? Are you involved in a research project? Have you volunteered for campus events? Are you in a student club? Do you play varsity sports?
Students can keep a list of their involvement in a wide range of college activities on the Experience Record. It's an online and fully accessible platform for reviewing and reflecting on skills gained beyond the classroom — times when you’ve shown excellent communication, adaptability, leadership and critical thinking.
By assessing what you’ve done so far, you can also find ways to strengthen those skills — and the Experience Record lists opportunities for you to do that. Faculty and employees can also access the platform to post opportunities for students.
Empowering students to speak to their experiences
Matthew Harris, Coordinator, Co-curricular Experiential Learning and Leadership Development, says the platform gives students the opportunity to reflect on how their participation in college activities can impact their career paths.
“Our goal is to empower students to speak to the experiences they have had, and how those experiences, in conjunction with the technical skills they have gained through their program at GBC, make them a candidate of choice," he said.
Showcasing college experience stats
A stats dashboard details how many hours you’ve put into various activities and which skills you’ve demonstrated.
“Many students don’t recognize that they are qualified when applying for a role because they don’t have one to two years of work experience,” Harris said. "We want students to recognize that these experiences are important.”
Harris also wants students to remember this is a living record that should be updated regularly.
How can I share my Experience Record?
Now that you have a handy list of the skills and experience you’ve gained at GBC, you can share it with potential employers.
The Experience Record can be added to your LinkedIn profile. It also features a shareable link you can add to your resume, website or emails while you’re in school and after you’ve graduated.
