Toronto – In response to the evacuation of Fort McMurray, George Brown College is opening the suites of its soon-to-open student residence to displaced Albertans. The residence, which housed athletes during last summer’s Pan and Parapan Am Games currently sits ready to receive its first group of students in the fall. It can accommodate up to 500 people.
The Alberta emergency has impacted thousands of families who are now struggling to meet very basic needs, like having a safe place to live. While the residence is a long way to travel, those making the journey will be given a safe and well equipped suite and support from the George Brown community.
“We have seen people from across Canada band together to support our Albertan neighbours, and we also feel compelled to help,” said Anne Sado, President, George Brown College. “Toronto may be a long way from Fort McMurray, but for anyone looking for options or who may have family in the GTA, the residence can provide a safe, warm place and a community with a proud history of compassion and support.”
George Brown College is encouraging other post-secondary institutions from across the country to open their doors as well, and support our Albertan neighbours during this trying time.
Displaced residents are asked to contact Alberta Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) for more information about staying at the George Brown student residence.
