Deaf Short Films Screening

George Brown College’s Peer Mentor+ and School of ESL host events commemorating International Week of the Deaf. All are invited to celebrate and learn more about Deaf culture in education and workplace settings!

Join us for an inspiring afternoon as we screen four powerful short films by Deaf Canadian filmmakers, followed by an engaging discussion. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to celebrate diverse voices and perspectives through film!

• Old Mother Tongue, directed by Mark Trifunovic: A Deaf man grapples with his sense of identity in a hearing world and is taken on a fantastic journey through time to one of the most significant events in Deaf history: the Milan Conference on the Education of the Deaf in 1880 when sign language was banned from use in education.
• Step Into My World, directed by Nicola Di Capua A scenario is created: a one-day shoot where the entire crew is Deaf, except an aspiring hearing production coordinator who comes to work without knowing the life-changing experience that awaits him.
• Fable Deaf, directed by Chrystene Ells With a uniquely Deaf aesthetic, Fable Deaf is a magical realist film featuring lush visual effects and an all-Deaf cast. Fable Deaf unfolds in a world of visual rather than spoken language, where the past is preserved in a glass library, and emotions can bring storms and monsoons.
• The Connection Project, co-directed by Jenelle Rouse and Kanika Gupta The Connect Film Project is a motivational and educational tool to urge filmmakers, editors, animators and writers to build accessible features into their works in all phases of production. While keeping accessible features as a forethought, break away from traditional/standard ideas and embrace originality without resistance.
