This month’s topic: School Wounds and UDL
Facilitated by: Kate KleinOne key element of the mainstream compulsory schooling system (that is, what most people attended from kindergarten until the end of high school) is an absence of choice. Compulsory means that even when you are experiencing negative things, like bullying, discriminatory streaming, or poor treatment from teachers, you still need to keep showing up... all day, five days a week. Many adult learners leave these experiences with what might be called "school wounds", lasting negative impacts on their self-concept and their relationship to learning. This session of the UDL Community of Practice will focus on how the choice that is embedded in the Universal Design for Learning framework can support adult learners to have reparative school experiences that change their inner narrative about what learning can be like and what they are capable of.
