Take part in FIRSt's new Product DNA Pilot Program

Do you have a product that is underperforming?

Explore the reasons for the underperformance with our multi-phase approach which will put you on the path to improved market penetration.

FIRSt is offering three opportunities to companies with one product each as part of a pilot program. Successful applicants are expected to contribute 50% of total project costs. The expected package cost is $20,000, with a client contribution of $10,000.

Product Evaluation

Gain insights through FIRSt’s product review. FIRSt will also perform a concise competitive analysis. Insights from this phase will be used to finalize the questionnaire used in phase 2.

Consumer Panel & Interpretation
  • Engage a small, targeted group of consumers in a quantitative style research panel, which will measure the impression of the marketing concept/packaging.
  • The consumer panel of 25 (within your target demographic) will evaluate packaging and marketing messages before and after evaluating the product attributes.
  • Just About Right values (JARs) will be used to identify the product attributes in need of optimization.
  • FIRSt will debrief the client on the findings from the panel and provide recommendations on next steps.
    Optimization Strategy & Execution

    The findings from the consumer research panel will determine which of the following optimization strategies is required. Companies will do ONE of the following.

    Product Optimization: FIRSt’s team will use the findings from the quantitative study to optimize relevant product attributes, which should improve repeat purchasing trends.

    • The client along with FIRSt will determine acceptable substitute ingredients to achieve improved acceptability.
    • The client will receive 2 feedback and tasting sessions, at FIRSt’s lab.
    • Final ingredient costs will be billed to the client with the final project invoice.
    • Finalized scalable formulation will be given to the client.
    • All intellectual property is owned by the client.

      Marketing/Branding Optimization: Bring the findings from the quantitative study to your marketing team refinement of the value proposition and market positioning.
      1. FIRSt will debrief with the client on the results of the consumer panel and will have one additional debrief (if required) with the client’s marketing team or agency.
      2. FIRSt will close the first phase of the project at this time. The Validation phase can occur at the package rate any time within the 12 months following wrap up.
      Post-Optimization Validation

      Verify enhancements to formula or marketing with a follow-up product evaluation consumer panel of new targeted consumers. Ensuring modifications resonate positively with potential consumers.

      • Evaluate panel questionnaire to ensure all relevant questions are being asked to address the optimization that occurred.
      • Product Evaluation Consumer Panel with 25 new consumers.
      • The consumer panel of 25 (within your target demographic) will evaluate packaging and marketing messages before and after evaluating the product attributes.
      • Just About Right values (JARs) will be used to measure the improvement in product attributes.
      • IF a client desires, this panel can be changed to a quantitative study for statistically representative data (100 people) and the client can use it for manufacturing planning etc. Additional costs apply.
      Data CollectionAs part of the funding agreement, the client will provide the projected relaunch date of the optimized product. FIRSt will follow-up 6 months and 12 months after the launch of the optimized product to gain insights into sales data.

      Companies that did not receive a grant are eligible to use this program, although space is limited. If your underperforming product does not fit into this program, please email us and discuss your challenge. FIRSt creates custom service packages for clients based on needs and budget.

      Any client that completes the program will be offered 15% cost savings on all future services that are contracted within the 18 months following the project wrap-up, including NFTs, shelf-life testing, additional a product development and sensory services.
